Looking in a Mirror and not Recognising Ourselves
⟼EN A programme on the need for empathy. How can artists remain true to their own critical intentions while at the same time depending on visibility in a thoroughly commercialised art system? What space does communication via social media leave for real empathy with the suffering of others? How does it promote the viral spread of suffering? And what images can we use to tell of a world that is showing us its wounds?

Thirza Jean Cuthand was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and grew up in Saskatoon. Since 1995 they have been making short experimental narrative videos and films about sexuality, madness, youth, love, and race, which have screened in festivals internationally, including the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, Mix Brasil Festival of Sexual Diversity in Sao Paulo, Hot Docs in Toronto, ImagineNATIVE in Toronto, Frameline in San Francisco, Berlinale, and Oberhausen Short Film Festival. Their work has also screened at galleries including the Mendel in Saskatoon, The National Gallery in Ottawa, and Urban Shaman in Winnipeg.
⟼EN Not a sex video, maybe a sexy video? About a latent gas mask fetish, but maybe actually about a certain art world tear gas controversy the filmmaker was involved in? But also about Chemical Valley in Southern Ontario? But with like a dick and tits and vag and gas masks and smoke bombs, lots of smoke bombs. A pretty film about weird shit.
